Devotional: September 21, 2020

God’s glory is on tour in the skies,     God-craft on exhibit across the horizon. Madame Day holds classes every morning,     Professor Night lectures each evening.

Their words aren’t heard,     their voices aren’t recorded, But their silence fills the earth:     unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

God makes a huge dome     for the sun—a superdome! The morning sun’s a new husband     leaping from his honeymoon bed, The daybreaking sun an athlete     racing to the tape.

That’s how God’s Word vaults across the skies     from sunrise to sunset, Melting ice, scorching deserts,     warming hearts to faith.

         Psalm 19: 1-6     The Message

The glory of God is reflected in the skies: here the Psalmist brings home that truth in various ways, using different metaphors. The rich imagery of the Psalm includes a professor lecturing in a classroom, and an athlete racing for the finish line.

As we were out driving last night, I commented to Jeana on the beauty of the sliver of the moon we could see over the horizon. How we all have missed seeing a clear views of the moon and sun in the last couple of weeks! We are so thankful that the smoke has subsided in our area. Now we need to continue to pray for those who are still unable to see the moon and the sky.

The Psalmist makes clear a basic Christian theological truth: all of God’s creation speaks to us about His glory and His power, even if such speech is inaudible.

This truth has been echoed many times, in many different ways, particularly in the visual and performing arts. I believe this truth is the inspiration behind one of the most well-known and beloved of hymns, “How Great Thou Art”, particularly verse 1. Here are thy lyrics to that verse and the chorus…

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art

May all of us have ears to hear and eyes to see the unspoken praise of all creation, witnessing to and glorying the Creator! Amen!

Prayer

Lord of the heavens and the earth,

Thank you for Your beautiful creation, which tells us of Your glory. When we admire it, remind us that You are behind every detail. Your hand delicately created everything which surrounds us, and we are gifted with the ability to enjoy so many different aspects of your creation. When we are discouraged by the sin and suffering in the world, may we be reminded of the beauty of Your creation, whether in person or though memories and pictures. Give us hope for the future. We pray this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
