The simple believe everything, but the clever consider their steps.
Proverbs 14: 15 NRSV
Our world is filled with information. Unfortunately, not all of the information is true. In other words, there are many falsehoods masquerading as truth.
Far too often, the police issue warnings about scammers, who promise wonderful things. Sadly, they never deliver anything, and often end up costing people financially. The scammers say, “For a small fee, you will get this amazing financial reward!” Not true! Identity theft is another reason to be cautious. How many of us have received phone calls, supposedly from the Social Security Administration? Of course, the call is from Cheyenne, Wyoming, merely wanting to verify your Social Security number, and your date of birth. Again, not true! There are many public service announcements warning about such fraudulent scams.
The solution? As the scripture points out, careful consideration goes a long way towards discerning truth from falsehood. We need to weigh everything carefully. Wisdom sometimes comes after learning from hard mistakes. However, if we neglect that wisdom, we can fall victim to the same old traps. As many have observed, “If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
When dealing with a perplexing situation, or making an important decision, I will often see the Lord showing me signs. He gives me direction through His spirit. All I need to do is to slow down, and take time for the Lord to speak to me clearly. A quick, knee-jerk reaction to unverified information can end up costing me time, energy, and even money.
May the Lord help us to discern the sliver of truth among all the different information we receive. As the scripture points out, being “simple” and believing everything is not a good option. Instead, let us be clever and wise. Often, this means being patient. Rather than being pressured into a hasty and unwise decision, take the time to pray. Ask for the Lord’s guidance. God does not want us to be lost to the scams and falsehoods of this world.
God of all wisdom,
Help me to discern the truth among all the information that comes my way on a daily basis. Forgive me when I rush in, and even encourage others to take foolish steps. I need your help in sorting out the lies from the truth. Grant me patience, and wisdom. Lead me to make the best choices, choosing according to Your will. I pray this prayer in Your holy name. Amen.
