In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; 6but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— 7then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
Genesis 2: 4-7 NRSV
Each one of us is a miracle, a living, breathing miracle. Sometimes we forget that startling truth. We would not be here, except for the fact that God intended for us to be here, and that He breathed life into us, in the same way He breathed life into the first man and woman He created.
These verses also hint at one possible reason we were created. After describing the creation of the earth, the author of Genesis notes that “there was no one to till the ground.” Besides being created in order to have fellowship with our Creator, God gave us life because each of us has a purpose. We all have some kind of work, some calling, which motivates us to get up each morning. This work and this calling will be different and unique for each and every one of us. It may also change over the course of our lives, but each of us was created by God for a purpose.
Therefore, as you go about your day, remember that you are here upon this earth because of God’s intentions: He wanted you to be here. He breathed the breath of life into you. With every breath you take, you have the opportunity to give glory to Him. Therefore, let us worship Him with every moment of every day.
Prayer
Creator God,
Thank You for making me. I know that only Your son Jesus was perfect. Your Holy Word reminds me that ultimately, You were the one behind my creation. You wanted me to be here. Some in the world believe that all is random, but I know that You are at the helm of all things. Remind me daily of Your love, Your intention, and Your purpose for my life. I pray this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
