When I was upset and beside myself, you calmed me down and cheered me up.
Psalm 94: 19 The Message
Life is full of upsetting events. Health crises, strained or broken relationships with family or friends, plus conflict in our nation and world: all of these things can take a toll upon us.
Where can we turn? The Lord is always ready to listen to us, from our concerns, to our worries, to our anxieties. What’s more, when we find the world whipping up our emotions, making us even red hot with anger, God has a calming effect upon us. We realize that what is out of our control, is still not bigger than God. The Lord can find a way through our difficulties, when we cannot see one. This knowledge brings us peace, and strength, and a sense of calm.
The Lord also lifts up the burdens weighing us down. These words of the Psalmist bring to mind Jesus’ great invitation to all of his disciples:
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11: 28-30 The Message
Prayer
Almighty and loving God,
So often, we find ourselves burdened down by our worries, and anxieties. When we feel stressed, we sometimes lash out in anger, and find it hard to keep ourselves centered and calm. We know this is not Your will for us. Remind us that You are always ready to lend an ear. Thank you for offering to help carry all that weighs upon our minds, including (offer up specific worries or concerns…)
Prince of peace, grant me Your peace in the midst of this crazy world.
I pray this prayer in Your Holy name. Amen.
